The Shearer name has been synonymous with quality butchery in the Lincolnshire community for generations. Our story began in the early 1900’s when Horace Shearer, opened his first shop in the nearby town of Spalding. Horace’s son, Gerald Shearer, moved to Holbeach in 1950, where he established a business in livestock trading before opening the current shop in 1975. The shop started from humble beginnings when the garage and coal shed behind the family home were converted into the butchers’ shop. With Gerald’s long-standing history in livestock farming, the business quickly built up a reputation for sourcing locally reared quality produce.
With a foundation in traditional butchery and a commitment to sourcing the finest local produce, G. Shearer & Son quickly became a beloved part of the community. As the business flourished, Mark Shearer (Geralds’ son), took over continuing the family tradition. Our team grew, attracting dedicated individuals who have become part of the Shearer family. Award-winning butcher and manager of G. Shearer & Son, Ben Tindale, brings a wealth of experience and a modern perspective, steering us into the future.
In January 2021, Mark Shearer appointed his niece, Alice Taylor, to join the family business permanently. Fast-forward three years, she has been taught the ropes by her Uncle behind the scenes and is now the Managing Director. With a wealth of expertise in specialist retail and e-commerce, Alice is determined to drive the business to the next level.
We celebrate the passing of knowledge through generations, symbolized by the retirement of the esteemed Brian Burrell after 75 years of service (becoming one of the oldest butchers in England), and the rise of our young apprentice, Harley Baker. We are proud to participate in the MEAT Ipswich apprenticeship scheme, investing in the future of our industry.
